Winter getaway: Swap mountains for beaches in less than four hours
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (October 28, 2014) -Frontier Airlines is now offering non-stop service four days a week between Denver (DEN) and Palm Beach International Airport (PBI), starting this week. The inaugural flight landed at 7:20 p.m. on Oct. 26, bringing 130 passengers straight from the crisp mountain air of Denver to America's First Resort Destination®, The Palm Beaches.
"The Palm Beaches truly are the best way to experience Florida on a winter getaway," said Jorge Pesquera, president and CEO of Discover The Palm Beaches. "Denver visitors looking to trade skis for swimsuits this winter will now have much easier access to our premier golf, ecotourism and beach experiences found throughout the county."
Ranked as one of the most convenient, stress-free airports in the country, PBI is located just 2.5 miles from top resorts, pristine beaches and thriving downtown districts. This announcement is especially valuable for Denver outdoor adventure seekers looking for a warm winter getaway.
The Palm Beaches offer an average annual temperature of 78 degrees and approximately 234 days of sunshine year-round. Golf lovers will be thrilled to explore more than 160 courses in Florida's Golf Capital® and home to The PGA of America. Landlocked Colorado natives can also indulge in 47 miles of pristine beaches, 125 waterways and a heap of boating adventures in the ocean, lakes and Everglades.
A selection of unique experiences within Palm Beach County includes:
NORTHERN PALM BEACHES: Ecotourism and Sports
In Riverbend Park hikers, cyclists and kayakers can explore trails and waterways where Seminole Indian War battles were once waged.
Promoting the conservation of Florida's coastal ecosystems with a special focus on threatened and endangered sea turtles, Loggerhead Marinelife Center features one of the world's largest turtle rehabilitation centers.
As a combined nature center and a wildlife hospital, the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary offers visitors a one-of-a-kind opportunity to learn about Florida's wildlife and natural environments.
Jupiter's Roger Dean Stadium is home to two major Grapefruit League Spring Training teams - the St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins - and two year-round Florida State League teams.
SOUTHERN PALM BEACHES: Everglades and more
Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee Wildlife Refuge:
The largest chunk of the northeastern Everglades is preserved inside this Refuge. You don't have to prepare for a week-long trek, just take the boardwalk trail from right behind the visitor center. Make sure to try one of the ranger-led guided tours. Every February celebrate the annual Everglades Day Festival.
Grassy Waters Preserve
If it's the "River of Grass" you seek, then Grassy Waters is where you need to be to see the Everglades. Boardwalk trails take you over wetlands, past tree islands and within sight of forested hammocks. But if you want to get deeper into the grass, try one of four longer trails or a guided canoe trip.
The Wakodahatchee Wetlands
Walk the trail to see the marshes, ponds and sunning alligators. Things at The Wakodahatchee Wetlands are quiet, serene and ideal for photography and breathing in fresh air.
J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area
J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area is a big place - 60,000 acres in all. With all that preserve, spending a day on foot trails, bike or horse to see the Everglades is easy as can be. Corbett is also a stop along the Great Florida Birding Trail and Florida National Scenic Trail.
Loxahatchee Slough Natural Area
The headwaters of the federally designated, wild and scenic Loxahatchee River start right here. Find the headwaters via trails that take you by wet prairie, Everglades slough marsh, wet flat woods and more. After all, there are over 12,000 acres to explore.
Daggerwing Nature Center
You don't always have to go deep in the wilderness for a Florida Everglades encounter, sometimes a nature center will do just fine. Daggerwing has exhibits, live animals and short boardwalks with observation towers.
EASTERN PALM BEACHES: 47 miles of Atlantic coastline
The Palm Beaches is undoubtedly one of the best places to go to for its collection of unforgettable surf and sand. Visitors who like to be above water surface can enjoy fishing, sailing, boating and yachting, and snorkelers and divers can explore more than 20 reefs and an abundance of deep-water wrecks.
John D. MacArthur State Park
This Florida State Park is located in North Palm Beach and nestled on a barrier island. Almost two miles of picturesque beach offers swim, snorkel and refreshment in the clear blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean. In the estuary of Lake Worth Lagoon and Intracoastal Waterway, you can kayak, canoe, paddle board or go on short trails and visit the Nature Center. http://www.macarthurbeach.org/
