PALM BEACH COUNTY CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU ANNOUNCES
OPEN CALL FOR PROVIDENCIA AWARD NOMINATIONS
- Nominations deadline is March 5 for prestigious tourism award; Public again invited to select this year's Providencia Award winner among finalists on PalmBeachPost.com -
THE PALM BEACHES, FL (Feb. 12, 2013) - The Palm Beach County Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) is now accepting nominations for the 2013 Providencia Award, which is awarded to a local business, organization or individual that is making an extraordinary contribution to the vitality and prosperity of Palm Beach County as a desirable tourist destination. Nominations may be made online through March 5 at palmbeachfl.com/Providencia.
All nominations will be reviewed by the CVB Providencia Committee comprised of PR professionals from throughout the County, which will narrow the list to three final candidates. The public will be invited to select the 2013 Providencia Award winner by voting online through a partnership with
The Palm Beach Post at PalmBeachPost.com. This year's Providencia Award winner will be announced on May 7 in conjunction with the CVB's 30th Anniversary and the U.S. Travel Association's designated Travel Rally Day recognizing National Travel & Tourism Week.
"Travel and tourism is one of Palm Beach County's largest industries," stated Jorge Pesquera, president and CEO of the Palm Beach County CVB. "We have tremendous potential for further growth in visitation and tourism activity. For example, an attainable 10 percent increase in visitors would add five and one-half percent increase in hotel occupancy, $550 million in additional visitor spending, $5,000 new jobs and $82 million in additional state and local taxes." Added Pesquera, "We are thrilled the community is involved again this year in helping to select the winner of this prestigious award and recognize past winners and those who have helped us reach our goals."
Nominations are based on several criteria: contributing to the growth of the local tourism industry; implementing innovative sales, marketing, PR and social media initiatives; and creating awareness of Palm Beach County as a premier tourist destination. Nomination forms and guidelines are now available at palmbeachfl.com/Providencia. The deadline for submissions is March 5. Online voting begins in April and will be hosted on
The Palm Beach Post's website.
"The Post is honored to support the Providencia Award," said Tim Burke, Publisher of The Palm Beach Post. "This is a great opportunity to spotlight Palm Beach County's champions, and to share that excitement with our community."
The Providencia Award is named after the Spanish ship that sank off Palm Beach's coast in the 1880s. Its crew salvaged the cargo of 20,000 Trinidad coconuts and sold them to local residents, who planted them along the waterfront, eventually inspiring the town's name. Previous winners of the Providencia Award include Mr. James Ponce; Delray Beach International Tennis Championships; The Colony Hotel, Palm Beach; Morikami Museum & Japanese Gardens; Henry Morrison Flagler Museum; The Breakers Palm Beach; Kravis Center for the Performing Arts; Burt Reynolds; The Ritz-Carlton, Palm Beach; Norton Museum of Art; Boca Raton Resort & Club; South Florida Fair; SunFest; Jack Nicklaus; Marathon of the Palm Beaches; Delta Air Lines and the Palm Beach Kennel Club.
