Cloud Lake, Florida

The Town of Cloud Lake is a small predominantly low-density residential community located in central Palm Beach County. The Town operates under the Mayor-Council form of government and levies no municipal ad valorem tax.

Cloud Lake was developed by the late Kenyan and Karl Riddle of West Palm Beach. Construction of homes began in 1935 which makes it one of the first west suburban developments. Around 1940 Keynon Riddle set aside five acres from which dirt was taken to build the Seaboard Air Line Railroad overpass, now the overpass on Southern Boulevard over I-95. This five acre plot became Cloud Lake (the lake) named by Mr. Riddle for a Seminole Indian Warrior, the Cloud, of the 1840’s. When the Town was established in 1948, reincorporated in 1951, the residents chose the name Cloud Lake for the town. The Town is 36 acres in size. There are two lakes located in the center of Town, Cloud Lake and Gem Lake which is shared with the Town of Glen Ridge. The Town is basically land-locked in that there is no land adjacent to it where it could expand its corporate limits. The Town of Glen Ridge abuts the western and southern limits, while I-95 and the City of West Palm Beach abut the eastern limits. Southern Boulevard (SR80) and Palm Beach International Airport are located to the north. Due to the widening of Southern Boulevard, more than half of the business properties were eliminated, leaving on two properties (both of which are undeveloped at the time). -text courtesy Dorothy C.
