DTPB Now Accepting Applications for 2015 Providencia Award

The Providencia Award is given annually to a local business, organization or individual based on their extraordinary contributions to the vitality and prosperity of The Palm Beaches as a tourist destination. All nominations will be reviewed by the DTPB Providencia Committee, comprised of tourism professionals throughout the county, ultimately narrowing the list to three final candidates. The public will be invited to select the 2015 Providencia Award winner by voting online at, beginning Monday, November 2nd through Thursday, November 19th. This year's Providencia Award winner will be announced on Thursday, December 3rd at the Discover Connections event at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens. The deadline for all submitted nomination applications is this Friday, October 2nd. You can access the application here.

Attendees of the 2015 U.S. Travel Association Educational Seminar for Tourism Organizations (ESTO) in Portland, Oregon were in for a special treat when President and CEO of Discover The Palm Beaches, Jorge Pesquera, personally announced that next year’s conference will be hosted at the Boca Raton Resort & Club in August 2016. This annual gathering of U.S. travel marketers is the only national forum where tourism destination professionals at the state, regional, and local level get critical tools, tips, and information to help them better market and grow their destinations.We look forward to these influential attendees coming to discover why The Palm Beaches are "best way to experience Florida."

This past month, the Public Relations Department, along with President and CEO Jorge Pesquera, Senior Vice President of Marketing Rich Basen, Tourist Development Council Executive Director Glenn Jergensen and Discover The Palm Beaches Board Chair Vicki Chouris, attended the 2015 VISIT FLORIDA Governor’s Conference in Tampa. This innovative conference, coordinated by VISIT FLORIDA, is a showcase of VISIT FLORIDA's marketing progress and is the premier annual educational conference for the Florida Tourism industry welcoming attendees from Florida’s destinations, attractions, hotels, resorts, parks, convention centers, government officials, media representatives and advertising agencies.

Congratulations to Verdenia Baker - New County Administrator!

On Friday, September 25th, 600 Palm Beach County movers and shakers attended an evening celebration in honor of Verdenia Baker’s promotion to County Administrator. In her new role, she will have executive powers to implement the policies and procedures set forth by the Board of County Commissioners. Working together with and overseeing 6,100+ county employees in over 30 departments, divisions and offices, they will work in unison to provide quality programs and information to PBC's 1.32 million residents.  The Discover Team joins these leaders in congratulating Ms. Baker for this significant achievement and wish her continued success in her career in public service.

Palm Beach County Hits 67 Consecutive Months of RevPAR Growth

Palm Beach County currently ranks 3rd in the state in Growth in Rooms Available compared to August 2014 and 3rd in the state in ADR Growth compared to January - August 2014.

  • Revenue Per Available Room (RevPAR) was $73, up 0.7% over 2014; positive for 67 consecutive months
  • Average Daily Rate (ADR) was $115, up 3.8% over 2014, positive for 27 consecutive months
  • Occupancy was 63.8%, down -3.0%, positive 59 out of the last 69 months.

ASAE 5 Star Weekend - Palm Beach Gardens, FL

ASAE descended upon PGA National for their annual Five Star weekend. Five Star is exclusively created and designed for association CEOs, providing them an opportunity to network, learn, and discuss critical issues facing associations today with their peers. Both Dori Jensen, Senior Director of Sales - Mid Atlantic, and Nalini Dube’-Borzym, Director of Sales - Midwest, invited key CEO’s to the event and joined in on the weekends networking events. CEO Jorge Pesquera welcomed this major influence event and thanked the PGA National Resort & Spa and Visit Florida for their support.

Medical Tourism Association Annual Congress - Orlando, FL

The World Medical Tourism & Global Healthcare Congress is a signature event of the Palm Beach County based Medical Tourism Association®. The event brings together up to 3,000 top medical tourism professionals from around the world who benefit through networking and collaborating while gaining insight into emerging trends from recognized speakers, practitioners, delegates and hundreds of exhibitors in the medical tourism industry. The Public Relations team hosted several journalists to the destination, including a Meetings & Conventions destination immersion trip, which included representatives of Facilities & Destinations, Convention South, Smart Meetings, SMERF Journal/Short Escapes and Convene Magazine. The group of esteemed writers was introduced to members of our Sales team, Douglas McLain and Steve Crist, as they explored the convention center and a diverse array of meeting venues, offsite venues, and “dine around” options for groups and meetings throughout The Palm Beaches.

On the outset of the team’s collective pitching efforts, The Palm Beaches also hosted successful individual visits from Bucket List Publications, The Post Argentina, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and International Travel Writer’s Alliance.

PR Team Travels To Promote Local Area

In an effort to promote our destination’s growing culinary scene, Director of PR & Communications Ashley Svarney attended the VISIT FLORIDA’s Emeril’s Taste of Florida event in conjunction with the Association of Food Journalists opening reception, as well as the Rolex Central Park Horse Show in New York City, as a means to promote the destination’s renowned equine-tourism.
