2015 Providencia Award
Congratulations to the 2015 Providencia winner!
The 2015 Providencia Award is given annually to a local business, organization or individual based on their extraordinary contributions (i.e. expansion of facilities, new events and outstanding business levels) to the vitality and prosperity of The Palm Beaches as a tourist destination.
Following an application process completed by ten award nominees, a committee of local tourism representatives selected three finalists: Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative, The Brazilian Court Hotel and Loggerhead Marinelife Center. The public then cast online votes over a two week period on The Palm Beach Post’s website.
“We are thrilled that the Loggerhead Marinelife Center has been selected as the winner of our 2015 Providencia Award from among very deserving finalists,” said Jorge Pesquera, president and CEO for DTPB. “This award is the most important symbol of recognition for our local tourism industry.”
“Loggerhead Marinelife Center is truly a world class facility doing truly unique and valuable work for the environment. It has made a tremendous impact in our area by establishing a valuable one-of-a-kind attraction for tourists to visit. Their tireless work rehabilitating injured sea turtles, monitoring sea turtle nests and organizing beach clean-up events for the iconic Juno Beach Pier sets them on a league of their own,” Pesquera continued. “Juno Beach is one of the most densely-nested places in the world for loggerhead sea turtles, and the unique work that the center is doing to protect the nests of this endangered species has been exemplary.”
“On behalf of our staff, volunteers, board of directors, and magnificent sea turtle patients, we are truly honored to accept the 2015 Providencia Award,” said Jack Lighton, president and CEO for LMC. “Because of the trusted partnerships we have created with county agencies and hotel and resort partners, Loggerhead Marinelife Center is able to provide richer experiences for more than 300,000 annual guests.”
“To be included in this year's selection process, with such great organizations as The Brazilian Court Hotel and Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative, was quite humbling,” Lighton continued. “We are thankful for the contributions of these wonderful community assets. We look forward to leveraging this incredible award to spotlight the uniqueness and allure of Palm Beach County, and we are excited to build upon our heritage in an effort to attract more guests to our wonderful community.”

Unique among nonprofits, Loggerhead Marinelife Center is a totally free (no charge) cultural facility in northern Palm Beach County, Florida. The non-profit center educates more than 300,000 visitors annually on their continued mission; to promote conservation of Florida’s coastal ecosystems with a special focus on threatened and endangered sea turtles. LMC’s beachside campus is home to one of the world’s most advanced sea turtle hospitals and research laboratories. The center also operates the iconic Juno Beach Pier.
The Providencia Award is named after the Spanish ship that sank off Palm Beach’s coast in the 1880s. Its crew salvaged the cargo of 20,000 Trinidad coconuts and sold them to local residents, who planted them along the waterfront, eventually inspiring the town’s name.
