Florida National Scenic Trail
Take a walk, a long walk, as in trip throughout Florida - from top to bottom. Over 30 miles of the Florida National Scenic Trail (part of the National Scenic Trail System) go through The Palm Beaches and best way to access it is via the Northeast Everglades Natural Area (NENA). Not only does NENA connect hikers (and in some cases, cyclers) from the Atlantic Ocean to Lake Okeechobee, it showcases many of The Palm Beaches finest parks and natural areas.
Where to Start?
If you’re hiking from the Atlantic Ocean to Lake Okeechobee, The Palm Beaches’ segment of the Florida National Scenic Trail starts at Riverbend Park and ends at the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail. In between you’ll hiking through various natural areas and preserves.

From the ancient Indian middens, through the Seminole War Battles, to present day restoration, see Florida as the first settlers did. Nearly 10 miles of hiking/biking trails. Look for a good variety of small animals, reptiles, and birds.
Loxahatchee Slough Natural Area

This is largest and most diverse of The Palm Beaches’ officially designated natural areas. The Slough is the historic headwaters of the nationally designated Wild and Scenic Loxahatchee River. Look for Sherman’s fox squirrels and blue herons.
Hungryland Slough Natural Area
Located along Bee Line Highway (Florida State Road 710)
Located on south side of road, after North County General Aviation Airport

Hike through wet prairie, wet pine flatwood, prairie hammock, cypress dome swamp, mesic flatwood, depression marsh, hydric hammock and strand swamp. Look for American alligators and tricolored herons.
J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area

Corbett is an extensive management area that features not only hiking trails, but camping, hunting, fishing, and a great variety of ecosystems. Look for feral hogs and turkeys.

LOST - Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail / Canal Point Access (Ending Point)

LOST is 110-mile trail encircling Lake Okeechobee all on top of the 35-foot high Herbert Hoover Dike. More than half of the trail is paved and the remainder consists of a two-track gravel roadway. Look for a fine variety of birds and small animals.
