Northeast Everglades Natural Area
NENA includes over 165,000 acres of natural Florida lands and more than a dozen different activity & education centers that provide information about the area's natural and human history. Here are NENA locations not on the Florida National Scenic Trail. 
Jupiter

Hike through nine native ecosystems: mesic pine flatwoods, with smaller areas of wet flatwoods, wet prairie, freshwater marsh, scrubby flatwoods, hydric hammock, prairie hammock, and pond cypress domes, and strands. Look for American alligators and peregrine falcons.
John C. and Mariana Jones/Hungryland Wildlife and Environmental Area
Entrance for hiking is at gate 6 along Indiantown Road (Florida State Highway 706, near State Road 710)

Hike or bike along the Old Jupiter-Indiantown Road, alongside of which is one of the highest quality, relatively undisturbed pine flatwoods remaining in South Florida. Various smaller, connecting trails are also available. Look for river otters and bobcats.

From the ancient Indian middens, through the Seminole War Battles, to present day restoration, see Florida as the first settlers did. Nearly 10 miles of hiking/biking trails. Look for a good variety of small animals, reptiles, and birds.
Lake Okeechobee

There are five access points to LOST in The Palm Beaches. LOST is the 110-mile trail encircling Lake Okeechobee. Hike atop the 35-foot high Herbert Hoover Dike. More than half of the trail is paved and the remainder consists of a two-track gravel roadway. Look for a variety of birds, small animals, and reptiles.

The park has two trails, allowing for all to walk among stately trees, flowering shrubs, estuary bridge, sand dunes, and thick beds of ferns. Look for butterflies and sea turtles.
Palm Beach Gardens

This is largest and most diverse of The Palm Beaches’ officially designated natural areas. The Slough is the historic headwaters of the nationally designated Wild and Scenic Loxahatchee River. Look for Sherman’s fox squirrels and blue herons.

Accessible only by boat. The island is located in Lake Worth Lagoon, near Lake Worth (Palm Beach) Inlet. One feature is the restored President John F. Kennedy nuclear bomb shelter. Extensive walking paths are located throughout island. Look for West Indian manatees.

Grassy Waters Preserve

The Preserve is a vast, 20-square-mile wetlands resource with both long hiking trails and meandering boardwalk trails. Look for American alligators and other reptiles.

Corbett is an extensive management area that features not only hiking trails, but camping, hunting, fishing, and a great variety of ecosystems. Look for feral hogs and turkeys.
