The Scoop: The largest chunk of the northeastern Everglades is preserved inside this Refuge. You don’t have to prepare for some week-long trek, just take the boardwalk trail from right behind the visitor center. Make sure to try one of the ranger-led guided tours. GRASSY WATERS PRESERVE

The Scoop: If it’s the “River of Grass” you seek, then Grassy Waters is where you need to be to see the Everglades. Boardwalk trails take you over wetlands, past tree islands and within sight of forested hammocks. But if you want to get deeper into the grass, try one of four longer trails or a guided canoe trip.
